Social networking is the use of internet-based social media programs to make connections with friends, family, classmates, customers and clients. Social networking can occur for social purposes, business purposes or both through sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram. They’re a key for staying in touch and up-to-date as well as contributing to our world and being creative. Social media makes a huge impact on students. The effects of social networking on university students are they use less cognitive thinking, their academic performance is worsening and they can become resourceful.
Firstly, social networking makes the students use less cognitive thinking. They rely too much on the accessibility of information that is available on the social media specifically as well as the web in general in order to get answers. This means that there is a reduced focus on learning as well as on getting information. Students tend to search for answers whenever possible without using their thinking skills. This would lead to lack of thinking skills as the answers are already been given. Students have to reduce this action so that they can widen their thoughts and learning skills. For instance, to answer an easy theoretical question, students will search for the answer online. What happen if the social media is not there when the student needs it? If the student cannot use their thinking skills, it shows that the social networking as well as the social media has made them become fully dependent on gadgets or the social media.
In addition, social networking affects the students’ academic performance. Being connected through social media and to stay connected with friends is good but if students talk about useless things with their cliques, it will be a waste of time. They will try to be connected in social media with their friends whenever possible. It will reduce their ability to concentrate while studying because of the distraction from social media. For example, when the teacher is giving a lecture, the students will update their social feeds with caption like this: ‘I don’t understand a thing from this lecture’. Would you understand the lecture, if you are focusing on the social media? The students gave up lectures to stay in touch with their friends that can cause them distracted from studying. The social networking have taken a big toll on students that it can affect the students’ academic performance.
The bright side of social networking is that the students can become more resourceful. The reason they can become resourceful is the social media provide a lot of information. For example, if students searched for free foods, there will be a whole lot of information about free foods. That is the power of social networking, students that have many contacts can easily get the information they want. The popular phrase such as ‘the world can be accessed with one finger’ can be applicable in this scenario. University students can prepare their assignments as easy as ABC. With many resources, one can be considered as knowledgeable as he/she knows a lot of things from social networking.
In conclusion, social networking gives effect to university students such as the students will use less of their thinking skills, the students will be affected on their academic performance and the students can also become a knowledgeable person. Being socially interactive can bring negative and positive effects toward students’ social life. University students must be careful of social media because many people can access our personal information details. Students have to make sure they are not too attached with their gadgets accessing their social media that can bring negative effects in their life. Social networking is good for those who make good use of it.
